ESO 350 – 40 (Cartwheel Galaxy)

ESO 350 – 40  (The Cartwheel Galaxy)

The Cartwheel galaxy is one of the most dramatic examples of a ring galaxy, it is about 150,000 LY across and at a distance of 500 MLY in Sculptor.

In the distance past one of the smaller close galaxy passed through the Cartwheel causing a powerful shock wave that passed through the galaxy producing a bright blue ring of star formation.

The Cartwheel was probably a normal spiral galaxy before the collision and it shows signs of reforming back into a spiral structure.
