NGC 1316 – 1317.

NGC 1316-1317.

NGC 1316 is a giant elliptical galaxy which is interacting with a smaller barred spiral galaxy NGC 1317, in the constellation of Fornax, at a distance of about 60 MLY.

The dust lanes in NGC 1316 and the faint arcs or shells in the outer parts of this galaxy suggest a recent merger with a dusty spiral galaxy.

There are numerous faint background galaxies including the brighter face-on spiral NGC 1310 (left edge) and an interesting trio (bottom right corner).
