NGC 5236  (M83)

Known as the Southern Pinwheel Galaxy,M83 is a bright large barred spiral galaxy in Hydra at 15 MLY distance.

A great example of a face-on galaxy that has many H11 regions in its spiral arms. There have been 6 supernovae recorded in this galaxy over the past 100 years.

In spite of its grand appearance M83 is less than half the size of the Milky Way.

Telescope.  16 inch F4.5 Newtonian.

Camera.   S Big ST 4000 XCM OSC CCD.

Exposure.  14 x 600 sec, 12 x 900 sec.   Mar. 2012,  Apr 2013.
