Helix Nebula (NGC 7293)

The largest  and nearest of the planetary nebulae. This is what happens when a star reaches the end of its life. The central star is very hot,50,000 degrees K and radiating in the ultra violet part of the spectrum, exciting the surrounding gas and lighting it up.

NOTE. There are several faint background galaxies scattered around the nebula.

Telescope.   16inch F4.5 Newtonian.

Camera.  S Big ST4000 XCM OSC CCD.

Exposure & Time.  15 x 900 sec.   Sept 2012.
