Horsehead Nebula (IC434)

Horsehead Nebula (IC434)

The horsehead nebula is the iconic small dark nebula with a distinctive shape of a head of a horse, in the constellation of Orion at a distance of approx. 1500 light years. This nebula is near the star Alnitak whose diffraction spikes can been seen top and bottom left of image.

By sheer chance the dark nebula happens to be projected against a bright red ribbon of emission nebulosity making it stand out from the background.

NGC 2023 is the bright nebula left bottom of image.
