M 42 (the Orion Nebula)

M42 is an immense nearby star forming region at about 1500 LY distance, probably the most famous of all the nebulae. M42 contains many stellar nurseries and the bright open cluster of stars known as the Trapezium. The Orion Nebula spans about 40 LY across.

NOTE.  Because of the nebula’s huge dynamic range of brightness, exposures of different duration have to be blended to show the full range of brightness.
