Westerlund 1

Westerlund 1.

Westerlund 1 (centre right) is a young, compact super star cluster and one of the most massive star clusters in the Milky Way.

This cluster contains a large number of rare high mass stars including yellow hyper giants, red super giants, luminous blue variable, OB super giants and 24 Wolf-Rayet stars, but appear reddish because they are seen through interstellar absorption. The Supergiant Westerlund 1-26 is one of  the largest stars known.

Westerlund 1 is in a very busy part of Ara with extended star fields, dark and faint emission nebulosity and at an estimated distance of 12,000 light years.
