M 42 (The Orion Nebula)

M 42.

M 42 is an immense nearby star forming region at about 1500 light years distance, probably the most famous of all the nebulae. M 42 contains many stellar nurseries and the bright open cluster of stars known as the Trapezium. The Orion Nebula spans about 40 light years across.

NGC 1977 (The Running Man nebula) is a complex nebula containing a diffuse reflection cloud and a bright HII region. The bright stars of this nebula are only a few million years old. This complex is only about 30 arc minutes from M 42.

NGC 1981 is the open star cluster to the left.
